Abstract

In the 1980, Alcohol treatment in Germany was divided into detoxication and psychotherapeutic treatment. As a result of this traditional division, many patients never dealt with the psycho-social aspects of their disorder because they were never able to reach the psychotherapeutic treatment stage due to ist high prerequisite level. The department of dependency disorders the Karl-Bonhoeffer-Mental Health-Hospital, a part of the Hospital of Reinickendorf in Berlin, started a so-called qualified detoxication in 1992. A new motivational ward was established in order to strengthen the intrinsic motivation of patients to start a psychotherapeutic treatment. With the aim to find out whether or not the Motivational Ward was able to reinforce the patients motivation to continue the cure by providing therapeutic support during the withdrawal phase, we have questioned all inpatient patients (n=439) in the time April 1, 19994 to September 30, 1994 referring a battery of socio-demographic, biographic and diagnostic parameters.
