Abstract
While addicts are found in all walks of life, those, however, who are patients in federal or state institutions are predominantly of a category with a lower educational level or a less qualified occupation. During or after the withdrawal period in such a hospital, motivation therapy can only be successful if the difference in achievement motivation particular to each separate category is taken into consideration and if appropriate therapy is implemented. Doctors and psychologists primarily focus on the behaviour of middle-class patients. This often renders them unaware of other categories and related life-outlooks. It has emerged from our practical work that an improved diagnostic approach - incorporating both sociological and socialisational parameters of addiction disorders - is required for the patients concerned.
