Abstract
In the present study, we examine the need for implementing differentiated forms of motivation treatment for encouraging patients to attend self-help-groups. Our study was inspired by the work of Lesch et al. (1990). These reserachers developed four different typologies for patients with alcohol disorders and came to the conclusion that abstinence groups are only indicated for those patients who appear to use alcohol as a form of self-medication in times of withdrawal, or for those who develop a strong desire for alcohol in situations where they consume small amounts, but who otherwise experience their psychosocial situation as healthy.
